The Kennedy Memorial Trust's ideals of global equity and promotion of relationships between communities fitted my personal belief
I graduated from the University of Aberdeen Medical School in 2003 with Honours and numerous clinical prizes, but after spending time working in rural areas such as Romania, the Outer Hebrides and tropical Australia, I realized that in order to have a true impact on improving the health of communities, I needed to meet health problems before they occurred: the essence of public health and preventative medicine.
The Kennedy Memorial Trust's ideals of global equity and promotion of relationships between communities fitted my personal belief and upon being awarded a Kennedy Scholarship in 2004, I undertook studies at the Harvard School of Public Health, the world's leading site of research and learning for international public health.
My studies have concentrated on rural and community medicine in remote areas, focusing on infectious disease epidemiology and intervention, and the political economy of public health in international development.
I hope to gain further clinical experience in India, and then plan to incorporate the policy aspects of international public health into my practice, with the aim of improving the health of some of the most disadvantaged communities in the word.
